Let’s face it, there are only a few people who understand the basics of making a cloth book. In this article I will cover the basics of making a cloth book with some practical instructions.
The hardest part of making a cloth book; is figuring out how to fit all of the photos and text together; so that they look as though they were put together by hand, and not on an automatic press. The way you do this is simple, but it takes some practice. To put it in simpler terms; you have to know what parts go where; and when you start sewing, you have to be able to do it without looking at the pattern.
One of the first things you should do is take a picture; of your text and try to arrange it as if it were written by hand. This will help you see what parts of the page are where; and will show you the right places to insert text boxes. As you take the picture of the text; be sure to keep a running tally of the position of each letter, especially the period. That way you can quickly find the right place to insert the period without using up valuable; sewing time looking for it.
Cover the inside of the book with a satin lined fabric. This keeps the interior from absorbing the ink or writing that might be present. Use buttons to sew all of the edges shut securely.
The outside of the book is also a great place to insert text boxes and pictures. You can sew two at a time, or even more if you want to. Just make sure that you do not leave an opening wider than the actual cover, or it will slip off.
The final step is to add a tear away. The tear away will help you keep the front of the book clean. It also helps to make the book fit tighter when you are finished sewing. Be sure to be precise about what you put on the tear away; as it needs to be tight enough that it doesn’t slip.
The final step is to flip the book over. This will help you see what you have sown and will give you a chance; to run out and purchase some thread and a pencil. You can then sit down at your sewing machine and get started.
The easiest step is to place the pattern on the front of the book. Then, with a pencil, trace around the edges; taking care to make sure that you are not leaving a hole when you do this. Next, take a piece of plain white fabric and cover the pattern with it; using the appropriate size of fabric, and line it up exactly like the pattern.
Next, using a measuring tape, measure the size of the pattern that you want to use. Add about a half inch to that measurement. Using a ruler, measure the size of the front of the cloth book that you want to use.
Then measure from the back edge of the front edge; of the book to the back edge of the front edge of the fabric. This will give you the front edge of the cloth book. Start lining up the front edge of the fabric to the front edge of the pattern; starting from the front edge and working toward the back edge.
Take a second ruler and place it along the front edge of the cloth book. Using a marker, draw a line, this will be the back edge of the book. Then, using a pencil, outline the back edge of the cloth book.
Finally, take a third ruler and place it along the back edge of the pattern. Then, use a pencil, draw a line this will be the front edge of the cloth book. These basic steps should get you started on the way to making a cloth book.
